License plate cams lead to $1M in recovered stolen property throughout Memorial Villages

The police officers who recover the 50th vehicle, "will be treated to dinner along with the arrested suspect," according to an email Schultz sent to the Village community. "The suspect's dinner, however, will be courtesy of the Harris County Jail."

The department is also approaching $1,000,000 in value for 2020 recoveries, totaling $1.5 million since the ALPR's implementation a year ago.

The department currently has 20 cameras installed throughout the city. Created by the company Flock Safety , the cameras record the back of every car that passes through the intersection.

For the 49th recovered stolen vehicle, MVPD officers were alerted when the stolen vehicle entered Piney Point and was alerted again when they continued to drive through the city. After MVPD detained the vehicle, the driver, and its passenger, they found various stolen items including methamphetamine and stolen clothing from a Steinmart.

According to Schultz's police report, it was the first time Steinmart had stolen merchandise recovered and returned to them after a theft.

MVPD covers the cities of Piney Point, Bunker Hill, and Hunters Creek Village. The department has 40 officers.
