Until Bulgaria gets its fans in order, it should be banned from international competition. Prime Minister Boyko Borissov could see the damage this has done to his nation’s reputation and rightly called on Borislav Mihaylov, the president of the Bulgarian Football Union, to resign immediately, saying it was “unacceptable” for his people to be connected with such blatant racism. Yesterday, Mihaylov stood down from his position but it is not enough. Bulgarian fans have shameful form on this issue with their national stadium already being partly closed due to abusive behaviour in other Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kosovo and the Czech Republic. The Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) has the power to throw Bulgaria out of the competition and it would send a strong message to fans everywhere.
“There have been too many incidents, too much negligence from the Bulgarian FA,” says a spokesman for the anti-discriminatory network FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe).
“Uefa should make an example of the Bulgarian FA and expel them from the competition.”
Former England striker Ian Wright believes Uefa have let the problem go on far too long and is furious at English Football Association (FA) Chairman Greg Clarke for being too softly-softly in his approach.
“Listening to Greg Clarke’s interview, listening to him pander up to Uefa,” said Wright after the match, “he’s the person that’s supposed to be going into bat in respect of what’s happening. Saying that ‘I know that there’s people at Uefa who have really strong feelings’ when have they shown any strong feelings about wanting to stamp out racism?”
Current England captain Harry Kane has called for “stronger punishments” and that Uefa needs to take a firmer grip on abandoning games in the face of such poor behaviour.
It says a lot for their discipline and courage that Kane and his team-mates carried on playing despite such aggression and won a resounding victory.
That is true professionalism.
But, ultimately, it is time now for more decisive action and an international ban for Bulgaria would ram home the message.
Far-right racist groups have long been associated with football.
In the 1960s through to the 80s in the UK, it was the National Front who paraded their racial hate at football games.
Since then the FA has worked hard to remove such organised extremism from the terraces, although many black players claim more needs to be done.
In 2004 Millwall was the first club to charged by the FA over its fans’ racist chanting.
Furiously disputed by its then chairman Theo Paphitis, the accusation was nevertheless a wake-up call and many clubs have since driven the message home to their fans.
Just as hooliganism was challenged and went out of fashion, so racism is unwelcome in the English game.
It is time other countries took note and moved on.
Of course, the best way to counter racism is for black athletes to carry on excelling on the pitch and elsewhere, scoring goals and winning medals wherever they compete.
The beauty of sport is that you are chosen to represent your country purely on your ability.
No positive discrimination or politically correct attitudes deliver top results.
Just hard work and talent.
That is by far the best advert for how a multicultural society can thrive.
It is hard to dislike anyone who is winning for you.
Racism breeds on resentment and the liberal elite have to bear much responsibility for the rise of the far right across Europe with its open door mass migration.
With immigrants often getting preferred treatment, it is little wonder than young unemployed people get fed up and gravitate towards nationalist parties.
But the racism on display on the Bulgarian terraces has little to do with that.
It is pure ignorance based on cultural insularity.
Very few migrants head towards a country that has high unemployment and poor living standards.
Bulgaria is ranked the most corrupt country in the European Union.
Instead, it is young Bulgarians who are heading west to seek work elsewhere.
If they wish to be treated with civility in new countries they should act more decently towards visitors.
Especially when they are supposed to be putting their best foot forward in an international competition watched by millions across Europe.
Instead, they have exposed themselves as a country full of backward prejudices.
A spell in the sporting wilderness would do them the world of good.
