Amelia Ferrell Knisely Nashville Tennessean Published 5:08 PM EST Mar 3, 2019 Elizabeth Smart, one of America’s best-known child abduction survivors, maintains that she is one of the luckiest people in the world. “The only thing that sets my story apart from thousands of other victims, not just of kidnapping but of sexual abuse and human trafficking, is that what happened to me came from a stranger, because most abuse and kidnappings come from people you know and trust,” she said. The National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse reports 90 percent of child abuse victims know their abuser, and one in 10 children will be sexually abused before they are 18. “Every child deserves that happy ending that I had,” Smart said. Smart retold the story of surviving her kidnapping and sexual abuse in graphic detail to a packed room of more than 500 guests, including House Speaker Glen Casada, Saturday night at The Davis House’s annual Button Ball in Franklin.
