Redondo Beach police received a call just past 7 a.m. and responded to the crash in the 1600 block of Aviation Boulevard, Sgt. Paul Ribitzki said. When officers arrived, they found the vehicle had struck a power pole on the west side of the street. Excess fuel from the vehicle ignited and flowed down the decline of Aviation Boulevard for approximately 100 feet, Ribitzki said. Damage to the power pole caused electrical sparks to fall onto the roadway. Redondo Beach firefighters put out the fire and rendered medical aid to the driver, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Ribitizki said. The man was not immediately identified by authorities. Aviation Boulevard was closed between Artesia Boulevard and Grant Avenue for nearly eight hours as police investigated the crash and Southern California Edison made repairs to the damaged power pole, Ribitzki said. The roadway was reopened about 3 p.m. Anyone who may have witnessed the traffic collision was asked to contact Traffic Investigator Clint Daniel at 310-379-2477, ext. 2721.
