Ole Miss’ defense came out strong in the first quarter of Saturday’s loss versus Texas A&M, allowing just 3.8 yards per play and 1.7 yards per carry. Things went a little less smoothly in the second quarter but still looked good, with the Aggies averaging just six yards per play and 2.8 yards per carry. Thanks to some turnovers the third quarter looked good, but the averages increased to 7.6 yards per play and 6.8 yards per carry. And in the fourth quarter Ole Miss’ defense became a series of turnstiles, allowing 9.9 yards per play and 10.4 yards per carry. That’s what happens when your defense is on the field for 37 minutes in a game. “I think they did wear down some,” Ole Miss coach Matt Luke said about his defense. “Especially in the fourth quarter. I think that third quarter they were on the field pretty much the whole quarter. We did a great job of getting the turnover for a touchdown and they had to come right back out. They went on two back-to-back pretty long drives.” Luke isn’t wrong. Ole Miss’ defense spent 11:03 on the field in the third quarter, compared to just 3:57 on the field for the offense.
