Miles Blumhardt Fort Collins Coloradoan Published 8:42 PM EST Nov 9, 2018 DENVER — The task got taller Friday for the No. 5 seed Fossil Ridge volleyball team after dropping an emotional 3-1 Class 5A state tournament quarterfinal match to No. 1 seed Chaparral on Friday at the Denver Coliseum. The question is now can the SaberCats rebound emotionally to get another whack at their nemesis after spending so much mental energy in the 17-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22 loss. “This definitely is painful,” said Fossil Ridge senior libero Charlie Durbin, her voice cracking. “We just let it get into our heads. But we are mad so tomorrow we are going to come in with fire and we are going to get ready to win three games.” That’s what it will take now to win a state title after Chaparral beat Fossil Ridge in the same manner as it did in the first match of the season. Fossil Ridge won the first game of that match 25-14. Friday, Fossil Ridge won the first game 25-17. But both times, Chaparral settled down and neutralized Fossil Ridge’s early positive energy then shook their confidence to pull away. “We have to throw this one aside,”Fossil Ridge coach Paul Shimek said. “We have the best swingers in the state and we know we can play with them; we just have to keep our confidence.
