Elk Grove High School students and staff honored veterans Friday, ahead of the Veterans Day holiday Sunday, while raising $800 for care packages for current soldiers deployed overseas. “Honoring Heroes, Past and Present” was the theme at the school’s fifth annual Veterans Day assembly, where students came to school dressed in red, white and blue attire, and welcomed local veterans, many wearing military regalia. The school raised funds to be able to sponsor three soldiers for the year through Elk Grove Village-based Packages 4 Patriots, a mission of Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit. The money will go toward the shipping fees. Now that the fundraising is done, the plan is for students to develop a pen pal type of relationship with each soldier, and send letters through the monthly packages. The assembly Friday included a keynote address by Brig. Gen. Kris A. Belanger, who commands the Arlington Heights-based U.S. Army 85th Support Command.
