Biggest takeaway There isn’t anything new or surprising. Just more of what we’ve seen in the past few years with the haves separating themselves more than ever against the have-nots. To think that Glendale Cactus is a “have-not” in 4A football sounds ridiculous. But look at what happened to the Cobras against the great juggernaut Scottsdale Saguaro – a 69-6 thumping that was over the first time Saguaro touched the ball with Conner Soelle returning a punt for a touchdown. Tucson Sahuaro moved down from 5A based on enrollment numbers, and look at its 4A score: A 63-19 shellacking of Chandler Seton Catholic. Goodyear Desert Edge, a 5A school a year ago, rolled in its 4A game against Phoenix Greenway 49-19 (actually, the most competitive of the 4A quarters). And Tucson Salpointe Catholic, which was arguably the second-best team in Arizona to Phoenix Mountain Pointe when both teams went 14-0 in 2013, pounded Cottonwood Mingus, 62-22. Biggest need An Open Division. I’ve been saying it for about eight years: There needs to be a playoff division set up for the heavyweights because the open enrollment law creates such disparity, especially in football, where numbers mean everything and magnet programs attract the best skill players.
