SPRINGFIELD – An apartment fire in Springfield’s Brightwood neighborhood Friday night displaced four people and killed several pet turtles, officials said. Firefighters rushed to the scene of the blaze at 30 Clayton Street just after midnight, said Dennis Leger, spokesman for the Springfield Fire Department. The fire appears to have started in the first floor kitchen and spread to the rest of the apartment, causing around $50,000 in damages. The four occupants of the apartment escaped unharmed from the fire and are being assisted by Red Cross, said Leger. The fire is under investigation by the Springfield Arson & Bomb Squad. No further information has been released at this time.
