My late father was a veteran — one of those drafted during World War II at age 28 when they were pretty much taking anybody, even married men with families. He didn’t stay in that long. He went into the service in 1944 and came out some time after the war ended in 1945. I don’t think he ever fired a Sherman tank shell in anger, but he did get to pitch some in the Philippines for his Army baseball team. When I was a kid in the ’60s we assumed that everybody who left to serve would get sent to Vietnam, but they weren’t. Some friends of mine wound up fighting the Cold War in either South Korea or West Germany. It seems luck and need had a lot to play in where you served.
