EAST LYME, Conn. (WTNH) – East Lyme police are warning residents of a scam where people are called and told that their child has been kidnapped. Police said on Monday that officers had responded to four calls over the past week where residents were contacted and told their child had been kidnaped. The victims reported hearing a child screaming for help in the background before they are then told to wire $5,000 to an account in return for their child being released. According to police, two of those calls were from 860-372-5402. Authorities are now reminding residents that these are scams that are used to extort money and that no one should ever wire money to unknown accounts or purchase gift cards as payments. Police ask that anyone who receives a similar call to contact them as soon as possible.
