By Mark Edward Nero | [email protected] | PUBLISHED: July 17, 2018 at 5:58 pm | UPDATED: July 17, 2018 at 6:06 pm South Bay residents may be able to breathe easier under the renewal of an air pollution abatement measure that was approved Tuesday, July 17, by the Port of Los Angeles’ Board of Harbor Commissions. Cruise ships will be able to continue plugging into shoreside power at the Port of Los Angeles under an agreement renewal approved Tuesday by the port’s harbor commission. Under the action approved by the commission, the port will ink a three-year service agreement under which cruise ships will be able to plug into what the port calls Alternative Maritime Power, or AMP, while at berth. By plugging in to shoreside power, cruise ships are able to shut off their diesel and gas turbine engines, thereby preventing more air pollution fouling the South Bay. The shoreside electrical power is to be supplied by the Los Angeles Dept. of Water & Power at outlets located at berths 91 and 93, where a total of two cruise ships can be connected simultaneously while at berth. Payment of the utility bills is the responsibility of the port, however the port then will invoice the cruise terminal operator or cruise ship owner, as appropriate, to be reimbursed. The port estimates that it will pay a minimum of $11,250 per month, or $125,000 annually, to the Department of Water & Power.
