Chevy KaineAnna Beahm | [email protected] A 6-year-old boy from the small city of Winfield is trying to collect 2,000 tubes of flavored lip balm for children at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. But why flavored lip balm? Chevy Kaine said he wants other children undergoing treatment who cannot eat during treatment to “have something good to taste” during treatments, which require some children to not eat or drink. Chevy has gastroparesis — an incurable condition that affects his digestive system. It takes his stomach about six hours to digest food — which can cause pain and other digestive issues. Chevy gets his nutrients and calories through a feeding tube instead of eating food like most people do. His grandmother, Shannon Sellers, said she will often bring Chevy flavored lip balm as a treat while he’s undergoing treatments in the hospital since he’s not allowed to eat or drink for long periods during his hospital stays. He enjoys the taste and it keeps his lips from getting too dry. “But what do the other babies do?” he asked his grandmother one day at the hospital a few months ago. Since then, Chevy has been on a mission to collect flavored lip balm for the young patients at Children’s Hospital.
