Dena Blizzard is “One Funny Mother,” which also happens to be the name of the comedian and married mother of three’s act coming to Crest Theatre at Old School Square in Delray Beach May 19 and 20.
She will share the back story behind a typical day in her life as she attempts to get ready for a girls’ night out with her friends.
Like many mothers, a trip to Target for some pencils for her children could easily turn into an unexplainable $1,000 shopping spree involving candy and new home decor. She covers this phenomenon and more in her comedic show.
“I wrote this show eight years ago and had just gotten a job doing warm-up for TV shows with Katie Couric and Nate Berkus,” said Blizzard, whose home base is New Jersey. “Then I quit my job in New York City and wanted to resurrect the show I had written.”
Although Blizzard’s children are now 12, 15 and 17, she remembers their toddler years like it was yesterday. In her show, she asks the age-old question many parents are faced with on a daily basis: “What the heck just happened and why am I covered in poop?”
Blizzard’s show is based on three acts including how much life changes after after having children, how essential one’s girlfriends become and how marriage changes after babies.
“In 2002, my husband was in the Air Force and I just started doing standup around that time,” Blizzard said. “No one tells you how drastically life really changes after having kids. I wrote this show because I wanted to show the funniness in motherhood. I started getting emails from women saying they loved what I was saying and that they could relate to it. Your face will hurt when you leave my show.”
Blizzard is also the mastermind behind Chardonnay Go, which was a spoof on Pokemon Go that’s now being developed into a drinking game for mothers slated to come out in August. The game is already available for preorder on her website or at Chardonnaygo.com.
“I love merlot but it didn’t have enough syllables in it to work for a game title so I went with chardonnay and now people all over the world have been sending me cases of chardonnay, so that’s been working out,” Blizzard said. “Since so many women are obsessed with wine, I thought, ‘Why not make a game out of it?'”
In the game, one of the spaces is time out and you have to turn your chair around.
“It’s ridiculously fun and it was a blast developing it,” she said. “It’s taken months to develop it. It started out as just a card game but has grown into something bigger.”
When Blizzard is not inventing games or touring, she said she can be found on her couch watching “Orange is the New Black” and shopping at Goodwill or Target.
“I wear jeans every day,” she said. “And I’m really focusing on the Chardonnay Go game now. I’d love to host a talk show in the future.”
Blizzard hopes people walk out of “One Funny Mother” knowing they’re not alone in the chaos of their own lives.
“The show is really like listening to a girls’ night out conversation,'” she said. “The motherhood journey is one that stays with you forever so we’ll have audience members spanning from 20- somethings to grandmothers. It will be nice to get to know the people of Delray Beach. The conversation of motherhood is so universal.”
“One Funny Mother” is 8 p.m. May 19 and 20 at Crest Theatre, 51 N. Swinton Ave. Tickets cost $31 to $41. Call 561-243-7922 or visit Oldschoolsquare.org.
